Carmichael's Bookstore
Best Bookstore in Louisville · KY
Louisville's oldest independent bookstore
Carmichael's is Louisville's oldest independent bookstore, opened in 1978 by Carol Besse and Michael Boggs on Bardstown Road. Across its Highlands and Frankfort Avenue shops (plus a dedicated kids' store), its shelves are hand-curated and its author events are a fixture of the city's literary life.
Women-owned and now spanning a second generation of booksellers, Carmichael's has outlasted the chains and the e-book era to remain the heart of independent reading in Louisville.
