Busy Bee Cafe has served soul food on Atlanta's west side since 1947, when self-taught cook Lucy Jackson opened it near the city's historically Black colleges. Its fried chicken — brined, seasoned, and fried to order — is the headliner, backed by oxtails, smothered pork chops, collard greens, and mac and cheese.
A civil-rights-era gathering place and a James Beard America's Classic, the Busy Bee remains a genuine institution: a room where students, politicians, and pilgrims of Southern cooking line up for the same plate.
